Phil-happiness
My first post during 60 days. My first post from Philmont. I could not be happier.
It seems like most everyone took advantage of 60 days to tour the world, watch the world cup, chill on the beach, and other very summertime activities. I don't know what got into me, however, because I decided to spend my "you-can-do-anything-you-like" leave to come out to Philmont for one more summer. It might have something to do with my association of Philmont with my childhood and the fact that I am not yet ready to grow up, but I am no Sigmund Freud, so you can decide yourself.
I am working at the Philmont Scout Ranch (with Pamela I might add) as a program counselor for one of the camps in the backcountry, French Henry. It is a mining camp, so we get to pan for gold and crawl around old caves (very creepy at times), but we also get to pretend we are living in the 1920's as people we are not. My character is a veteran of the Great War who came out West to be the master blacksmith of the camp. I will go ahead and make the offer once and for all--If you need anything smithed out of steel, shoot me a note now while I have the means to do something about it. I'd love to make you something cool.
Pamela and I are on days off together for the second time this summer. Last time we went into Taos for the weekend to walk around and check out the area. This time, who knows what we'll do? It is just incredible to actually spend time with her, and not have to worry about leaving her at the end of the weekend.
It is weird to think that I am a third through my summer fun, but I am enjoying every second of it. I am with people I love doing things I want to do (I am finally going to finish Kerouac's "On the Road") in one of my favorite places on the face of the earth. I wish everyone could come and visit, but stories on the blog work just as well. I miss you all.
